The music video opens with a picture of a tree (the tree of language) with the text “One day suddenly the light did not come. People forgot how to say good things”.
(Please note that Handong is not in this music video due to her schedules in China which conflicted with the filming and recording of Scream) |
Throughout the video, we can see the girls dressed in black with falling snow, which represents death/mourning. It seems that all the girls are mourning the death of someone, although Gahyeon seems to be taking it the hardest. (play slideshow)

It seems that JiU is a guardian of the tree, as we can see her in what looks to be a temple. We can also see her running to the tree as the pink glow starts to escape. It seems that she has sensed that something sinister has awakened, and is running to try to stop it.
As JiU is trying to stop whatever has awakened, we can see that Gahyeon has reached the center of the tree, finding a glowing crystal which represents the heart and power of the tree. Hoping the crystal will bring back the past and fix everything, she reaches out and touches it, causing it to explode.
Once the crystal explodes, everything starts to go wrong. The temple turns red, signifying the corruption of the Tree of Language. The purple flames that surrounded JiU have also turned red, and a red burst of magic is unleashed from the tree.
The tree/corruption starts to spread to the girls, as we can see the dark fog chasing and overpowering SuA, and Yoohyeon sensing danger and trying to run. Although the scenes are not in order in the MV, we can tell which scenes are from which part of the story based on the color. Red signifying the corruption, purple and white signifying before the corruption.
The corruption has affected the girls. False memories (signified by the black and white scenes) of the girls spreading lies or hurtful words have been ingrained into their heads, causing them to split up.
However Siyeon and Yoohyeon can sense something is wrong with their memories, which makes them seek the truth. We can see this as Siyeon’s eyes seem to be clear.
And Yoohyeon bursts out a wave of blue-ish magic which can signify her memories being purified. The lyrics also indicate them seeking the truth: After everyone left I’m opening my eyes All traces have disappeared Can’t believe me. Forget everything you saw Believe that nothing happened |
Lyrics
My eyes are covered Colored with blood Tell me why I don’t lie A cold wind blows I feel the eyes on me All pain flowing through my veins My tied up hands are getting numb Everyone throws stones at me But I can’t escape This isn’t fun at all Who is this for? Someone please tell me On this burning path of fire, now Please I don’t want to scream (Devil eyes come, eyes open, eyes open) Please I don’t want to scream (Scream scream scream scream) Spreading in the darkness, scream Tricks behind the mask, ridiculous freaks The growing hatred gives birth to random targets I swallow up the burning thirst but hypocrisy says it’s my fault The end is sitting at the edge of a cliff It’ll be a choice that only remains regret Words that cut like a sharp sword Dig deep into the scars But the breath won’t stop I can’t figure any of it out Who is this for? Someone please tell me In this rising smoke, now Please I don’t want to scream (Devil eyes come, eyes open, eyes open) After everyone left I’m opening my eyes All traces have disappeared Can’t believe me Don’t be sad, no more no more no more For me, no more no more no more Uh uh Forget everything you saw Believe that nothing happened One by one, everyone goes crazy I just wanna make you scream (Devil eyes eome) Everyone looks at me and scream (Scream scream scream scream) I just wanna make you scream |
Analysis
"This isn’t fun at all Who is this for? Someone please tell me" These lines reference the idea that harsh words are for their benefit, and you should just smile through it all and bear it because it's "constructive criticism" and "for your own good" "Tricks behind the mask, ridiculous freaks The growing hatred gives birth to random targets I swallow up the burning thirst but hypocrisy says it’s my fault The end is sitting at the edge of a cliff It’ll be a choice that only remains regret" The mask that is referenced in this rap is the anonymity that people hide behind to leave cruel comments and words. This rap talks about people being mean to innocent and random people. The line "I swallow up the burning thirst but hypocrisy says it's my fault" means that even when you ignore the comments, it hurts, but if you say anything to defend yourself you get ridiculed which is hypocritical The last two lines talk about feeling like you are pushed up against a cliff, with the only option being something you will regret Please I don’t want to scream (Devil eyes come, eyes open, eyes open) The song "Scream" is about the protagonist being plagued with hateful words/comments and "devil eyes" (people glaring at them for no reason). No matter what the protagonist does, there will always be hateful words and comments even if they try to avoid them. After everyone left I’m opening my eyes All traces have disappeared Can’t believe me Don’t be sad, no more no more no more For me, no more no more no more Uh uh Forget everything you saw Believe that nothing happened One by one, everyone goes crazy These lines talk about when people who leave these hate comments delete them. It's so easy for them to just delete the comment, claim ignorance that they never wrote it, and move on. But for the person who read it, the damage is already done. You can't prove someone wrote a comment after it has been deleted (all traces have disappeared, can't believe me) and it's hard to explain the hurt and damage it caused. The last line "one by one, everyone goes crazy" references the cycle that these comments cause, eventually driving the protagonist/artist crazy. |
